It’s hard to believe that summer has officially started and we’re already at the midpoint of the year. (Technically that’s next Thursday, but we’re close enough now.) The summer movie season is in full swing and we have another big blockbuster hitting screens to finish out the month of June before we head into July 4th weekend next week.
F1: The Movie
I’m not going to lie, I think this is my most anticipated movie of the year and has been for the last two years ever since it was really in full production mode. Brad Pitt has been around the Formula 1 races for the last several years as the production team has filmed on actual tracks during actual Grand Prix weekends. If you’re a fan of F1 and have seen the trailers, you’ll know that many of the names that race on the grid on Sundays appear in the film and that is part of what makes me so excited for the movie. It’s produced with the aid and permission of Formula 1 and the FIA and that’s what’s going to make it great for true fans of the sport.
M3GAN 2.0
Almost as soon as the original M3GAN film came out in January of 2023, traditionally a dead spot in the release calendar, there has been little doubt that there will be a sequel, with more to come if this one is equally successful. In fact, there is already an announced spinoff film called SOULM8TE scheduled for release next January. Many of the original cast members return for this iteration including Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, Amie Donald, Jenna Davis, Brian Jordan Alvarez, and Jen Van Epps.
Sorry, Baby
The film this week that was not on my radar is Sorry, Baby, the directorial debut of Billions actress Eva Victor. Produced by Barry Jenkins (Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk), the film also stars Victor in the lead role with Naomi Ackie and Lucas Hedges filling supporting roles in a story about a college professor who tries to recover from a sexual assault.
