Well, the Oscars are over, and I was able to take a bit of a breather this week. That said, the movie world never rests so there are new movies coming to theaters this weekend. Check out the new releases, and could we even be seeing our first true Oscar contender for next year hitting theaters this weekend?
In the Lost Lands
Normally I would be totally jazzed about a new film with both Milla Jojovich and Dave Bautista, but given the fact that the first I’d heard about this film was about 5 minutes ago when I looked up the plot summary, it feels like a huge throw away. The film is directed by Paul W. S. Anderson who directed and/or wrote all of the Resident Evil films, oh and he happens to be Jojovich’s husband. The plot seems irrelevant at this point, but if you’re interested, they’re apparently looking for a power that allows someone to turn into a werewolf. <shrug>
Mickey 17
Yeah, I know this isn’t an English language poster, but it’s so visually stunning that I had to use it for this film. Probably the biggest film that people are looking forward to in the first quarter of this year and it finally lands this weekend, Mickey 17 is the latest from director Bong Joon-Ho and stars Robert Pattinson as the title character, the 17th iteration of his self that is left for dead, but ends up surviving and facing off with his replacement. It looks hilarious and I can’t wait to get to a screen to see this one.
Night of the Zoopocalypse
Another film that wasn’t on my radar until 10 minutes ago, this animated film centers around a group of animals trying to survive a zombie outbreak. I’m not sure that’s really the best premise for a family film, but without much else in the family demographic until we get to Snow White later this month and Minecraft in April, this might be your only option for a family night out at the movies.
Queen of the Ring
I’m a bit surprised a film like this is getting a wide release, and at another time of the year it probably wouldn’t, but at the same time I’m glad to see a story of a woman in a traditionally male dominated sport being put on the big screen. Queen of the Ring tells the story of Mildred Burke, a professional wrestler at a time when women were banned from the sport in most of the country. The cast is all unknown to me, but does appear to include some present day women from the wrestling world that fans of the sport will likely recognize.
Rule Breakers
Another film based on a true story, Rule Breakers brings audiences into the world of robotics and focuses on four girls from Afghanistan who make it to a competition in Washington, despite coming from a country where educating girls is frowned upon or outright banned. If you’re looking for something a bit more uplifting this weekend, this could be the film for you.
My local theater has had ads and stickers all over the place for NIGHT OF THE ZOOPOCALYPSE since September. This theater did not show this movie.
