It’s been a crazy week so my preview is a little behind schedule, but here are the films you can look forward to at the box office this weekend.
The Alto Knights
Barry Levinson (Rain Man, Wag the Dog) brings Robert De Niro back to the big screen for yet another gangster tale. De Niro pulls double duty in this film about two rival gangsters in New York City in the 1950s. It feels like a story we’ve seen before, especially with De Niro, but he’s so good in these roles so it also feels natural that he would keep doing them.
Ash
Another film that has flow completely under the radar, Ash stars Eiza González and Aaron Paul and is directed by Flying Lotus. The film is firmly set in the science-fiction horror genre where an astronaut wakes up to find the entire crew of her space station has been killed. If this is anything like the last space “thriller” I saw (I.S.S. last year) it might be best to avoid this one.
Disney’s Snow White
This is the film that is going to suck up most of the air in the room this weekend, and dominate most of the screens across multiplexes. There has been plenty of controversy around this entry in the Disney live action remake-verse, but with families starving for new content in theaters this winter, it feels like a good chance to get out to the movies. Director Marc Webb has success with The Amazing Spider-Man films, so here’s hoping he can bring people back to theaters with this remake.
