With the July 4th holiday landing on a Friday this year, the release calendar shuffles a bit and gets us a wide release on Wednesday hoping to capitalize on many people having Thursday and Friday off of work. That said, there is only one major release taking advantage of this schedule but it brings some big names back to the screen.
Jurassic World Rebirth
Did we really need another Jurassic film? Probably not. Are we going to keep getting them as long as people are making movies? Probably. However, despite the tidy ending to an equally unnecessary Jurassic World trilogy that included the return of many favorite actors and characters from the original film, the fact that it only took three years to reboot the franchise yet again is a bit surprising. On the plus side, director Gareth Edwards does have some decent experience tackling big films from enormous franchises (see Rogue One and the 2014 Godzilla). On top of that, the film brings two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali and two-time Oscar nominee Scarlett Johansson into the mix, so right there I’m on board. Will it ultimately succeed the way the original or even the first Jurassic World film did? Probably not. But time will tell.
This is Spinal Tap
When you think of classic 80s comedy films, Rob Reiner and Christopher Guest are among the first names that should come to mind. They are each incredible on their own, but their collaboration in This is Spinal Tap is the thing of legends.1 The film would be an early example of the “mockumentary” genre which Guest would become well known for with later films like Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind. But in some ways, this is the original, and now is your chance to see it on the big screen for the very special 41st anniversary re-release.
They would later collaborate again on The Princess Bride and Guest would have a small role as Commander Stone in Reiner’s Academy Award nominated A Few Good Men.
