Glad you included the limited releases because I rarely see a major release in its first weekend! As you might be able to tell from my reviews I'm more of an indie/int'l/doc fan.
I'm gonna say the shitty woke thing and point out that if Is God Is was directed by Tarantino, every film bro in the Anglosphere would have sold out IMAX screenings of it. But it's directed by a black woman and majority black cast, so to those bros "they don't make those sorts of movies anymore."
(Meanwhile Guy Ritchie, waving, "I'm still here!" and everyone is like, "Oh yeah that reminds me, Snatch and Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels were great, what can we do to get movies like that back into movie theaters?")
You're absolutely right about that Dane. I'm so intrigued by that film, especially seeing Sterling K. Brown in the role of abusive father since I always associate him with more wholesome characters. Maybe it's his infectious smile or just his time on This is Us, but I'm REALLY interested to see him in that role.
By the way, it's not a "shitty woke thing" if it's the truth. Stuff like that needs to be called out more often so thank you for stepping up and making the point!

Yeah, I used to do it on my old site and got away from it, but with the folks on Substack, it felt like it was time to bring it back.
