One of the final films released in 2023, Anyone But You, finally landed on Netflix recently and I decided to fire up the big red āNā and check it out.
If youāve seen the trailers for the film, you pretty much known everything you need to know. Bea (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben (Glen Powell) meet in a coffee shop at the beginning of the film and enjoy what seems to be a perfect day together. After a misunderstanding the next morning, Bea runs off and they despise each other, only to find out that Beaās sister Halle (Hadley Robinson) is going to marry Benās friend Claudia (Alexandra Shipp) several months later.
The pair are forced to spend a weekend together in Sydney, Australia at the coupleās destination wedding where they initially fight, but then agree to pretend to be together to help save the wedding weekend.
The film is (VERY) loosely based on the William Shakespeare play Much Ado About Nothing, and it probably should have stuck closer to the source material. There are a few lines dropped in directly from the play, but the characters immediately claim this lines as their own, which while funny if you know the joke, is a terrible insult to The Bard.
Letās face it, people probably arenāt going to see Anyone But You for a great Shakespeare adaptation. Theyāre going to ogle at Sweeney and Powell, and in that department you wonāt be disappointed. There is plenty of cleavage on display from Sweeney and Powellās washboard abs are prominent throughout the film. Some of the lesser characters go even further too if thatās what youāre into. But even all that canāt save this film.
