Today is the second in a two part look at the Daredevil and Elektra films from the mid-2000s. Unfortunately, on re-watching them, neither are particularly good, though Elektra did land slightly better for me than Daredevil.

Buy Me a Movie

Jennifer Garner returns in Elektra even after meeting her demise at the end of Daredevil two years earlier.

So let me start off today’s essay by saying I never watched Alias. I know it’s pretty much the role that made Jennifer Garner a star to whatever level she is (was), but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a single moment from any episode. But I’ve been a fan of Garner’s for as long as I can remember. No, she hasn’t won any major awards outside of Alias, but I usually enjoy her films more than I probably should.

As a 20-something male when this movie came out, I was THE target demographic, lured in by images of a fit and trim Garner in the skin tight red outfit, kicking ass through the film for an hour and a half. Had we had things like Letterboxd and Trakt back then, I probably would have added everything in her filmography to my watchlist and certainly would have checked out Alias at some point. (Side note, I worked at a bookstore up until about a year before this film came out and I can remember now stocking a number of Alias novels on the shelves and seeing Garner’s face looking out from the covers).

Interestingly, I have two more Jennifer Garner films on my list for this challenge in September which I believe will vault her into a tie atop my most watched actors list on Letterboxd for 2024. I might just need to watch one more of her films to break the eventual tie with Charlie Chaplin.
