Today's episode is my conversation about the 1928 film White Shadows in the South Seas. My friend Matthew Brady from the Warren Peace newsletter joins me to discuss the film and we talk about why this film was almost a shoe in for winning Best Cinematography
It's funny David, Matt and I read the same thing and Matt brought it up on the episode, but we actually also called it out with Vicki Lesley on last week's episode about Our Dancing Daughters, which according to Wikipedia came out two months earlier. I don't know if the lion roar on the version I watched of that film was added later, or if they just mean that White Shadows was filmed first or what, but I think there's actually something to look into on that. I might need to dig more into this at some point in the future.
Yeah, every source I've been able to find agrees with White Shadows being the first, but I've seen two versions of Dancing Daughters online that have the roar. 🤷♂️
This film is the first in which the lion in the MGM logo can be heard roaring.

I just read that factoid a long time ago in a book and it stuck.
